A commission in Montgomery hears recommended changes to Alabama’s 1901 Constitution. The Associated Press reports Gov. Robert Bentley on Monday suggested to the commission headed by former Gov. Albert Brewer to change how vetoes are handled in the state.
Under current law, a gubernatorial veto can be overridden by a simple majority vote in the Legislature--53 votes in the House and 18 in the Senate. According to the AP, Bentley proposed a rewrite to that portion of the state constitution to require a three-fifths vote by the Legislature to override any veto by the governor. Bentley believes that rewrite would bring Alabama in line with how most states handle overrides.
The AP reports Republican Rep. Randy Davis of Daphne said some members of the Legislature believe that type of rewrite would dilute their power and make it harder to override a veto.
