One of Talladega's growing attractions was closed as of Thursday night after a logger found what appear to be ammunition shells on the property.
The Top Trails Park is usually home to four wheelers and trail bikes but a logger moving some fallen trees uncovered what could be live ammunition.
The former Coosa Ammunition Depot Annex used to sit in the area where the shells were found. The Army vacated the land years ago and turned it over to the city, where the Top Trails Park is now being developed.
Today a Talladega Police car stood guard in front of the park's locked gate.
After the shells were found state bomb techs rushed to the scene from Anniston, where they happened to be training Thursday. They determined the shells could be explosive, but definitely do not contain any chemical weapons.
A crew from Fort Benning, Ga., will come to the park and either remove the shells or detonate them on site.
Here are some facts about the discovery:
-The logger uncovered 15 to 20 shells when he was moving logs.
-Each shell is approximately 22 to 24 inches long.
-It's not known how old they are, but they could date back to WWII.
Talladega Police Chief Alan Watson says he's not concerned about immediate danger because the shells didn't discharge when the logger disturbed them and the park is in an isolated area, away from town and away from residential areas.
Watson says he has confidence the shells are not a hazard unless someone further disturbs them. Police say anyone who tries to go on site will be arrested for trespassing.
