A committee established by the governor has been tasked with studying how to reduce pharmacy costs for the state Medicaid agency. Gov. Robert Bentley on Thursday signed Executive Order 40 that establishes the Medicaid Pharmacy Study Commission, an advisory commission chaired by State Health Officer Dr. Don Williamson.
Commission members will review the Alabama Medicaid pharmacy delivery and reimbursement system and will also compare Alabama’s program to programs in other states. The commission will review options to reduce pharmacy costs while maintaining a quality program and will present their findings to Bentley by December.
In October of 2012, Gov. Bentley formed the Alabama Medicaid Advisory Commission to review the state Medicaid system. Thursday’s formation of the Medicaid Pharmacy Study Commission is Bentley’s next move in Medicaid reform in Alabama.
Acting Alabama Medicaid Commissioner Stephanie Azar will also serve on the new commission and said in a release “the transformation that will take place over the next few years will be significant.”
