The National Women’s Law Center has filed complaints against Auburn University and other universities and businesses claiming the institutions are ignoring a provision of the Affordable Care Act. The Associated Press reports the NWLC claims five institutions across the country have failed to offer pregnancy coverage to dependent children of employees.
The complaints were filed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office for Civil Rights on Tuesday. Schools in Washington state, Pennsylvania and Ohio along with a healthcare company in Indiana are reportedly listed in the complaint which may be investigated by the U.S. Department of Health. National Women’s Law Center vice president for health and reproductive rights Judy Waxman said in a statement that by excluding maternity coverage for female dependent children of employees means they receive less comprehensive benefits than men.
