The Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant will have about 1,000 people take part in a safety drill on Wednesday. The Associated Press reports the Athens nuclear power plant will undergo an emergency preparedness exercise involving Tennessee Valley Authority workers, state employees and emergency responders in five north Alabama counties.
According to the AP, officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Homeland Security will grade the drill required each year by federal regulators. The Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant has been under scrutiny from the NRC for several years when inadequate safety measures were revealed at the plant.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a red finding for the plant in 2011, the most severe citation short of closing a plant. Only four other plants have ever received a red finding.
