A voting rights caravan is planned for this month in Alabama. The Associated Press reports Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and others are planning a caravan across Alabama to encourage the U.S. Supreme Court to consider keeping Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.
According to the AP, the National Coalition of Leaders to Save Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is also calling on Justice Antonin Scalia to remove himself from the court case because of public comments he made. The Wall Street Journal reports Scalia said on Monday the section of the Voting Rights Act which requires several states with a history of racial discrimination pre-clear their voting laws with the Department of Justice is “racial entitlement.”
State Sen. Hank Sanders and Alabama Democratic Conference Chairman Joe Reed told the AP the June 14 caravan will start at Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church and then visit Shelby County, which brought the challenge to the Voting Rights Act. The caravan will also make stops in Selma and Montgomery.
