A prosecutor says the Selma police officer who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and her stepfather before turning the gun on himself was a military veteran suffering from multiple stressors. The Associated Press reports Selma police officer Dwight Moorer was suffering from what appeared to be post-traumatic stress syndrome after two military tours along with work and relationship troubles.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson told the AP he knew Moorer and said the stress of being a police officer, an Afghanistan veteran and stress from some relationships “just all came together at the same time.” According to the AP, authorities believe the 28-year-old Moorer killed his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend Keoshia Hill and her 59-year-old stepfather Bill Jackson before fatally shooting himself.
Police found the bodies of Moorer and Hill in a car on Sunday. According to the AP, Moorer was off-duty at the time of the slayings and authorities believe the weapon used was his service weapon.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is investigating the deaths and will release their findings to the district attorney’s office.
