A former Birmingham mayor serving 15 years in a federal prison for accepting bribes says he is dying behind bars. AL.com reports former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford is trying to get an early release citing an unknown medical condition.
He reportedly wrote an email saying that probation officers in Birmingham and the prison warden at the Kentucky facility all approved his request to go home to die. According to AL.com, the Bureau of Prisons has not responded to comment requests.
Langford was the mayor of Alabama’s largest city in 2009 when he was convicted of accepting nearly $235,000 in bribes as a Jefferson County Commissioner. Two men pleaded guilty to paying the bribes, testified against Langford, and also went to prison. Langford maintains his innocence despite the U.S. Supreme Court rejecting his appeal last year.
AL.com reports Langford was transferred to the prison’s medical center about a year ago but there has been no public comment on his current medical condition. He is scheduled for release from prison in 2023 when he will be in his mid-70s.
