(WDNG) - More than 11 miles of bicycle trails in Calhoun County are added to the National Trails System. The U.S. Department of the Interior on Friday added almost 650 miles to the National Trails System. The trail system was designed 45 years ago and is administered today by the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service along with other federal and nonprofit entities.
Friday’s release by the Department of the Interior adds 28 new trails in 18 states and includes the Forever Wild Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail System. National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said the new trails join a network of more than 1,200 previously designated trails that now total more than 15,000 miles across the country.
Other trails in Alabama added to the National Trail System include two miles in northwest Madison County, the one-mile Phenix City Riverwalk and more than two miles of the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve Trail in Pinson.
