(WDNG) - An Anniston eighth grader has been eliminated from the championship finals of the national Scripp’s Spelling Bee. Meghana Giri, an eighth grader at the Donoho School, successfully spelled the words “glasnost” and “blanquette” and defined the word “peculate” on Wednesday morning to make it through the final round of preliminary competition. Only 42 contestants advanced to the semifinals after computerized testing. Despite a flawless onstage performance, Meghana did not advance to the semifinals.
Meghana competed against 280 other spellers from across the country for more than $35,000 in cash and prizes. This was her first and last visit to Washington D.C. to compete on the national level. She began her road to the Scripp’s Spelling Bee competition in March after moving through county and state bees.
The championship finals will be broadcast on Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
