A center designed to direct volunteer workers in rebuilding a destroyed Tuscaloosa after tornadoes ripped through the state two years ago is set to close. The Tuscaloosa News reports the Volunteer Reception Center was formed in that city just hours after the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak devastated much of the state.
Over the past two years, the center has reportedly registered more than 41,000 volunteers from all 50 states along with 18 countries. According to The News, officials at the center say that the last day of operation will be Friday now that the volunteer effort has slowed to a level that is easier to manage.
Volunteers wishing to continue rebuilding efforts are now being asked to visit Tuscaloosa’s city hall where they will be referred to local organizations that continue to work in the area.
