A recent high school graduate caused one fatality, sent several people to the hospital and damaged 10 vehicles Tuesday night in Huntsville.
According to a news release from the Huntsville Police Department, Gunner Joseph Scarano, 18, of Owens Cross Roads, was involved in accidents in two different locations at around 6 p.m. while driving his 2005 Ford Extended Cab pickup truck.
The first accident occurred at Bailey Cove Road and Mountain Gap Rd. where Scarano reportedly hit four different vehicles before leaving the scene. Four accident reports were filed by police and four cases were opened for leaving the scene of an accident. No major injuries were reported at the location.
Following the hit-and-run wrecks, Scarano caused a series of accidents after striking a Toyota Van carrying a mother, Andrea Coppens, and three children. The van crashed into a Kia Soul, which hit a Lincoln Town Car, which swiped a Honda minivan and also hit a Toyota truck.
A 10-year-old daughter of Coppens was pronounced dead at the scene and eight other people involved in the accident were sent to the hospital. Three of the victims transported were considered to be in serious condition including Scarano, who is facing life-threatening injuries at UAB Hospital. Coppens and the victim's grandparents were informed of the girl's death at Huntsville Hospital.
Blood samples were collected from Scarano and test results are pending.
"The investigation is ongoing and we are working very closely with the DA's office as we always do on a traffic homicide case." Dr. Harry Hobbs, a spokesman for the Huntsville Police Department said in the release Wednesday.
Scarano graduated from Huntsville High School on May 23 and was accepted to attend Auburn University in the Fall.
