(WDNG) - An Anniston eighth grader continues through the first rounds of the national Scripp’s Spelling Bee. Meghana Giri, an eighth grader at the Donoho School, successfully spelled the word “glasnost” on Wednesday morning to begin the second of three rounds of preliminary competition. This is her first visit to Washington D.C. to compete on the national level.
Meghana is competing against 280 other spellers from across the country for more than $35,000 in cash and prizes. She began her road to the Scripp’s Spelling Bee competition in March after moving through county and state bees. During the second round of preliminary competition, 15 contestants misspelled words and were disqualified from advancing.
266 contestants, including Meghana, will advance to the final round of preliminary competition on Wednesday afternoon. The next round of competition will be broadcast live on ESPN3 or on the ESPN website on Wednesday shortly after 12 noon.
The championship finals will be broadcast on Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
