A Lawrence County man has been arrested and charged with arson in connection with eight wildfires in the state. The Alabama Forestry Commission on Tuesday announced investigators arrested 21-year-old James Luke Ellis of Moulton for allegedly starting eight fires on May 16 in the Mt. Hope area of Lawrence County.
Forestry Commission Chief Craig Hill said in a statement on Tuesday that one fire was set on private property and the other seven were started on federal lands. Hill said that witnesses in the area help identify Ellis. Hill said approximately 31 percent of all wildfires in Alabama are intentionally set.
Last week’s arrest comes after recent campaigns in Cleburne and Cherokee Counties that solicited help from the general public in identifying those responsible for setting fires along the eastern state border. Wildland arson is a felony which can carry a penalty of up to ten years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.
Tuesday’s release says that the investigation is ongoing and other arrests may be forthcoming.
