John Martin Noles, 36, was arrested at his home in Hoover without incident around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has charged him with one count of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19 years.
Noles was taken to the Shelby County Jail and later released after posting a $6,000 bond.
Noles is listed as a social studies teacher on the Chelsea High School website.
The Shelby County School Board issued the following statement through their spokesperson Cindy Warner:
"We are aware of these allegations and take them very seriously. The school district took immediate action when we were made aware of these allegations in early May. Mr. Noles has been placed on administrative leave while the school district continues to conduct an ongoing investigation into this matter, in cooperation with law enforcement officials."
