The long Memorial Day weekend will see some extra state troopers on Alabama roadways. The Associated Press reports the nationwide Click It Or Ticket campaign will result in extra Alabama State Troopers enforcing the state seat belt laws.
Many city and county law enforcement agencies across Alabama are participating in the national campaign.
According to the AP, the state Department of Transportation is anticipating heavy traffic over the three-day weekend and says there will not be any temporary lane closures on Alabama interstate from noon on Friday through midnight on Monday. The department also said road construction and maintenance will be limited during the holiday weekend.
Gov. Robert Bentley on Thursday announced he has awarded nine grants totalling $200,000 to support the Click It Or Ticket campaign, which will continue through the rest of May. The grants are designed to pay overtime for officers to conduct seat-belt safety checkpoints and extra patrols.
Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs director Jim Byard, Jr. said in a release this week “extra patrols and increased visibility of law enforcement officers should remind motorists that seat belts and safe driving are especially critical during major holidays.”
More than $16,000 will be made available for Alabama State Troopers in Calhoun, Cleburne, Talladega and five other surrounding counties.
According to AL.com, Alabama State Troopers investigated three fatalities on Alabama roadways during Memorial Day 2012 and seven in 2011. Those numbers don’t represent accidents investigated by local law enforcement agencies in the state.
