(WDNG) - A mysterious illness that has killed two Alabamians in the southeastern part of the state is deemed not to be a serious outbreak. State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamson said during a Thursday news conference that the recent string of respiratory illnesses that have hospitalized 10 people in southeast Alabama is not an unusual illness. He said the reaction of doctors to alert the state Department of Health when patients began to show cluster respiratory illnesses simply represents the way the system is supposed to work.
Williamson said all 10 cases can be linked to some combination of influenza A, bacterial pneumonia or the rhinovirus. He said the patients have ages ranging from 24- to 87-years-old. Two deaths have been linked to the illness cluster; one victim was 34-years-old and the other was 55-years-old.
Williamson said that many of the patients have already gone home and he doesn’t believe the recent respiratory illness cluster is a public health concern.
