Two people are dead and five remain hospitalized in what health officials described on Tuesday as a “cluster” of respiratory illnesses with flu-like symptoms. The Dothan Eagle reports the Alabama Department of Public Health along with the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reports of a mysterious illness that is attacking people across southeast Alabama.
An official with the ADPH tells The Eagle that two people died over the weekend and one remains in ICU. Symptoms described with the “cluster” of respiratory illnesses include fever, coughing and shortness of breath. According to The Eagle, several young people and an elderly person are among the admitted cases. The time frame for the illnesses ranged from mid-April through Monday and all seven people admitted to hospitals are from an 8-county area in the southeast part of the state.
An official with the Department of Health tells The Eagle that the investigation is in its early stages but there are no indications that the unknown illness is highly contagious.
