150 or more court employees across the state might get laid off unless the court system can get more money than the Legislature approved. The Associated Press reports Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore warned on Tuesday that more court layoffs may come without an additional $8.5 million.
Gov. Robert Bentley on Monday signed a $1.7 billion General Fund budget for the next fiscal year that is 0.4 percent larger than the current operating budget. According to the AP, that equals a $16.7 million increase and the judicial branch of state government is expected to receive $5.6 million more than the current year.
Moore says that he is pleased by budget increases but says courts may be in trouble without that extra $8.5 million. Without the extra funding, he tells the AP that up to 1,800 could be laid off, mostly among juvenile probation officers and circuit clerk office employees in county courthouse across the state.
Some of the budget problems reportedly stem from the Legislature’s attempt to raise more money for the court system. Higher court fees levied in 2012 were expected to raise $25 million each year but estimates were based on 100 percent collection. According to the AP, those fees are only raising about $12 million.
