Hundreds of people filled the Speed Channel Dome in Talladega on Monday to welcome back the National Guard’s “Fourth Alabama.” 242 soldiers with the Alabama National Guard 167th Infantry Battalion returned home after spending more than nine months deployed to Afghanistan.
A ceremony was held at the Speed Channel Dome at the Talladega Superspeedway on Monday where more than 300 families filled the seats to welcome back troops from E-company and F-company. Randy Black of the Family Readiness Group with the Alabama National Guard said that the soldiers first arrived in Mississippi for the final leg of their duty before returning to Alabama.
Troops weren't alone on their return home as the Patriot Guard Riders provided an escort for the men and women in the 167th. Lt. Col. John Bass served as commander during deployment and said shortly before Monday’s ceremony the troops provided security and assistance to American and Afghan forces during their deployment. Only minor injuries were reported during their mission and 12 volunteered to remain overseas to assist the 226th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
The Alabama 167th was also deployed to Iraq in 2005 and can trace back its nearly 200 years.
