A chemical spill leads to the closing of a major Anniston intersection. Anniston police and fire along with Alabama State Troopers have closed the intersection of Alabama Highway 202 and Hunter Street just west of downtown Anniston on Tuesday morning.
Anniston Fire Department Assistant Chief David Randle said from the scene that possibly hydraulic fluid filled a large section of Hunter Street sometime Tuesday morning. It is believed a tanker truck spilled the chemicals onto the road. The spill affected part of the eastbound lanes of Highway 202 which forced the closure of the road.
Randle said that his department got to the scene just before 7:30 Tuesday morning and crews began spreading sand to help clean up the spill. The Alabama Department of Transportation should be on scene sometime later today to assess the situation and make the decision when to open the intersection to traffic. Authorities on the scene said that it may not be until noon or later before the intersection can be open.
