Two confirmed tornadoes touched down in northern part of the state to kick of a weekend of foul weather which left many in east-central Alabama underwater. The two tornadoes with winds topping out at 75 miles per hour skimmed through Limestone County in the 2 o’clock hour of Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service on Saturday, the tornadoes developed from storms that moved into the state around 10 a.m. Friday morning. The first and strongest tornado dropped just three miles south of Athens and caused some damage to homes and businesses along Highway 72.
The following day, torrential amounts of rain were dumped onto the state, including more than three inches across much of Calhoun County. Roads were closed due to flash flooding and mudslides, and a section of Cleburne County Road 3 was washed away by flood waters.
The Anniston Star reports an Anniston teen was rescued from a culvert on the 1400 block of Quintard Ave. Saturday afternoon after he was reportedly swept away by fast-moving storm runoff.
According to information from the National Weather Service, the 3.11-inches of rain that fell in Anniston on Saturday broke the record for the amount of rainfall on that day.
