Students at a southeast Alabama high school are being punished for what is described as a “mild and calm” sit-in protest. The Dothan Eagle reports school administrators at the Northview High School in Dothan have revoked the student body’s break time privileges until the end of the year after about a dozen students staged a sit-in last Friday.
The protest came as a result of about a dozen teachers being dismissed, which can be a normal occurrence at the end of a school year. Northview High School Principal Chris Shaw told The Eagle that the protest was “about as mild and calm as it could possibly be.” The school administration responded to the protest by suspending the entire student body’s break times for the final days of the school year.
Some parents are disappointed the school punished all of the students for the actions of just a few. One parent told The Eagle “it’s their school, they should have a say in what goes on.”
