Trials for two former state prison employees accused of involvement in the death and cover up of an inmate have been set for this summer. The Associated Press reports former corrections Lt. Michael Smith and former correctional officer Joseph Sanders will be tried separately. Smith’s trial is expected to start on June 12 and the Sanders trial will begin July 1, both in Montgomery. Both men have maintained their innocence.
Two other men pleaded guilty in January to covering up the death of 24-year-old Rocrast Mack at the Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton on August 4, 2010. According to the AP, the state Department of Corrections originally said that Mack struck a guard and continued to while other officers restrained him. An investigation was launched when an autopsy raised questions about the incident. Correctional officer Melissa Brown and Smith, a shift supervisor at the time, were later fired.
The AP reports one of the defendants that pleaded guilty in January said he led Mack to an office knowing the inmate would be beaten. The trials for the two men are expected to take between two and three weeks each.
