A sheriff’s office investigation of recent credit card fraud cases has led back to a chain of convenience stores. The Anniston Star reports more than 100 reports of credit card fraud filed with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office have been traced back to Mapco Convenience Stores. Mapco Express last week announced that hackers used malicious software to gain access to the gas station chain’s payment card processing systems for one week in March and for four days in April.
Customer information was reportedly stolen from stores across the southeast, including northern and central Alabama, although no specific locations were identified. A press release from MAPCO says that the convenience store chain has taken steps to strengthen their security by disabling the malware used by the hackers as well as working with the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies.
According to the MAPCO website, there are 15 locations in Calhoun County. One location on in Oxford at the intersection of Quintard Ave. and Snow St. has been closed. An employee of that store simply said they are closed because of “issues.” Customers who are concerned their personal information may have been compromised are being told to contact their banking institution.
