Some Anniston speed limits have been reduced, including The Model City’s original thoroughfare. The Anniston City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to lower the speed limits on three Anniston roads from 30 mph to 20 mph. Shipley Road in McClellan, Oak Street in east Anniston, and Noble Street between 8th Street and 15th Street all now have speed limits of 20 mph.
Changes to the speed limit on Noble Street came as an initiative by the Spirit of Anniston. Spirit of Anniston Director Dianna Michaels said on Wednesday that the change is a push to make the downtown area more appealing to foot and bicycle traffic. “Slowing traffic down will make drivers more aware of pedestrians,” Michaels said.
The city council on Tuesday also agreed to apply for a third round of federal grant money. The money applied for is through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program, which provides 80 percent of the funds for bridge and road repairs and replacements. If approved for the grant money, the city of Anniston would have to provide the remaining 20 percent of funds needed for any projects.
In February, the city was awarded ATRIP funds to extend Iron Mountain Road. The project was expected to cost over $5 million, but federal funds left the city liable for only $1.2 million, or about 23 percent of the entire cost.
