The impromptu memorial outside Savannah Hardin's house has grown to include a teddy bear and several candles. Her desk at Carlisle Elementary School has been placed just inside the school's front doors and some of her work, her school supplies box, and other materials are laid out on top. I talked to several neighbors, none of whom wanted to go on camera, who gave some context for the family and what happened Friday. One neighbor who lives very near the house said he saw Savannah running outside around 4 p.m. on Friday but didn't think anything of it, he thought she was just playing or practicing for something at school.
When I asked if Joyce Garrard, Savannah's grandmother, was out there at the time, he declined to say. He did say when the ambulance pulled up, he thought it was because Jessica Hardin, Savannah's stepmother, was having her baby. He didn't learn until Monday what had happened.
Savannah Hardin allegedly was "run to death" by her grandmother Joyce Garrard as punishment for eating candy on Friday, Feb. 17. The girl was made to run around the house for around three hours before collapsing, according to authorities. Savannah died at a hospital three days later on Monday, Feb. 20. Garrard and Jessica Hardin have both been charged with her murder.
