A law signed last month by the governor will allow more than 250 road and bridge repair projects to move forward in rural parts of the state. Governor Robert Bentley’s office on Monday announced that all 67 Alabama counties have seen transportation projects funded by the Rural Assistance Match Program, including 22 rural counties that previously could not provide a match to obtain federal funds.
Bentley said in Monday’s release that “I don’t want school buses to have to go around bad bridges.” He said that repairing rural infrastructure will make communities more attractive to companies that are looking for places to build and expand. Calhoun County did not appear on the current selection round, but Cleburne County will receive $5 million for 10 bridge replacements.
Hale and Lawrence County projects will each top $7 million.
