The Alabama Forestry Commission is responding to a growing number of wildfires along the eastern state border. The Arson Awareness and Fire Prevention Campaign will be held in Cleburne County beginning on Thursday.
An announcement from the state Forestry Commission this week says the campaign will involve AFC law enforcement and fire suppression personnel soliciting public help in identifying those responsible for setting recent forest fires. A similar campaign was conducted last week in Cherokee County and the Georgia Forestry Commission will be holding similar campaigns across the state line.
Forestry Commission Law Enforcement Chief Craig Hill said in the release that arson has been a problem along the state line and that the people responsible for setting these fires should understand the great financial losses they cause to property. Last year, 38 fires scorched 850 acres in Cleburne County. More than 1,000 acres of forest have burned in Cleburne County since October.
According to Hill, wildland arson is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
