A laundry list of issues ranging from welfare drug testing to revamped gun laws remains for lawmakers in Montgomery with only one day left in the current legislative session. The Associated Press reports the Legislature worked until nearly midnight on Thursday completing state education and General Fund budgets. Lawmakers will take this week off before returning for their final day next Monday on May 20.
More than 100 local bills are reportedly pending in the Legislature, including a bill that would allow Sunday alcohol sales in the town of Weaver. According to the AP, other measures include two welfare-related bills that must pass the House. One bills would require welfare recipients to undergo drug testing if they have had a drug conviction within five years. Another would not allow recipients of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to spend benefits in bars, casinos, or liquor stores.
Gun laws will also be on lawmakers’ agendas with one week left in the current session. Senate lawmakers will review bills that seek to place armed security guards in Alabama schools and other security upgrades. The bills have already passed through the House and came in response from the Sandy Hook school shootings late last year.
