An nuclear power plant in Alabama will undergo some of the final inspections by federal regulators. The Associated Press reports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday will be near Athens at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.
This week’s inspection will be the final major step toward the TVA installation coming out from increased oversight linked to problems stemming back two years. Monday’s review is related to major safety violations after workers allegedly failed to detect a faulty valve in a cooling system in 2010.
Problems began in 2010 when Browns Ferry workers discovered a core cooling valve in one of the reactors was jammed shut. According to a report from The Decatur Daily, that valve is critical in cooling the reactor core in the event of a fire. That violation reportedly revealed inadequate safety procedures at the plant.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a red finding for the plant, the most severe citation short of closing a plant. Only four other plants have ever received a red finding.
