Just down the street in Jacksonville, Alabama, Longleaf Studios is getting ready to open. It will boast the biggest green screen in Alabama and hopes to attract film projects to this area as part of a pilot program designed to lead the way for the rest of Alabama. Last year over 1.8 Billion Dollars was spent in Louisiana by the film industry – over 1.3 billion of that directly in communities around the state. Cities that were sleepy, laid back communities such as Baton Rouge are now booming – glittering with money pumped in from the big studios. The Twilight films were all shot in Baton Rouge, as was Battleship Los Angeles and Tom Cruise’s latest film, Oblivion. Now Alabama wants studios to consider this state for future projects. There are 3 things that are needed for a location to land film deals: a workforce (JSU’s film program is addressing this), incentives (already in place) and places to film. With our amazing natural beauty and varied scenery plus this new 18,000 sq foot production studio, Pete Conroy (North East Alabama Entertainment Initiative) hopes that we have a winning ticket!
