At a Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee meeting this morning Pete Conroy (JSU) spoke on a number of topics. One was the Freedom Riders Park which is slated to be built just off Hwy 202. As part of an initiative to bring Heritage dollars into this area (bus tours, visitors etc.) this park will also stand as a reminder that positive change sometimes is spurred by something terrible. While the bus burning incident was indeed horrific, there were several positive and uplifting stories that came out of this segment of Anniston’s past – a past that affected the whole country. Now, according to Conroy, many “A” list actors are behind the project and willing to donate to see the park become a reality. In another related push, Pete Conroy said that there is a strong move to include the bus burning incident in Alabama history curricula. If you would like to donate to the park fund, please send a check to Freedom Riders Park of Anniston, AL, c/o Longleaf Arts Council, PO Box 6084, Anniston, AL 36202
