Lawmakers in the Senate voted to approve an education budget and a 2 percent pay raise for some employees. The Associated Press reports the Alabama Senate late Tuesday voted 22-11 to approve a nearly $5.8 billion budget that would slightly increase spending on schools next year.
The Senate also narrowly approved giving K-12 teachers in the state a 2 percent pay raise. According to the AP, the budget and pay raise bills will return to the House on Thursday for review. The 2 percent raise would reportedly be the first for K-12 employees since October of 2007. If approved, the changes would take effect when the new fiscal year begins on October 1.
