Home brewing in Alabama has been approved by the Legislature and now moves to the governor’s desk for final passage. The Associated Press reports the Alabama Senate late Tuesday voted to legalize the bill that was passed by the House last month.
If approved, the bill would allow home brewers to make up to 15 gallons of beer or wine every three months. The beverages can be taken to various tastings and competitions but cannot be sold. Alabama remains the only state in the nation that does not allow home brewing of alcoholic beverages since Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed a law allowing it in his state.
According to an AP report, the American Homebrewers Association estimates about 5,000 home brewers in Alabama despite prohibitions of an individual owning the equipment. Republican Rep. Mac McCutcheon of Capshaw told the AP he sponsored the home brew bill because of military personnel moving into his Huntsville-area district were surprised to learn their home brew equipment was illegal in the state.
Opponents of the bill reportedly say it represents the latest in a series of laws passed by lawmakers that expands liquor sales in the state.
