A district attorney who successfully prosecuted a former state trooper in a civil rights-era slaying will be honored by the Alabama Democratic Conference. The Associated Press reports District Attorney Michael Jackson of Selma will be presented with the John F. Kennedy Personal Courage Award in Montgomery this weekend.
In 2007, Jackson charged former state trooper James Bonard Fowler for the 1965 slaying of 26-year-old Jimmie Lee Jackson at a voting rights demonstration in Marion. Fowler pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2010 when he was 77-years-old and was sentenced to six months in jail.
Alabama Democratic Conference Chairman Joe Reed told the AP that the weekend convention that will host the award presentation will also include workshops designed to build a stronger Democratic Party at a grassroots level.
This will be the first ADC convention since Mark Kennedy resigned as chairman.
