The grandmother of a Gadsden 9-year-old that was forced to run to death is trying to get out of jail on bond. The Associated Press reports 48-year-old Joyce Garrard will have her bond considered by a judge on Tuesday. She has been in jail for more than a year on capital murder charges in the death of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin.
According to the AP, authorities say the woman forced Savannah to run as punishment for a lie. The girl continued to run until she eventually collapsed and died days later. Savannah’s stepmother is also charged in the murder but has been released from jail on bond.
An earlier bond hearing last month was delayed by Circuit Judge WIlliam Ogletree but the reasons for the delay are still not known.
