A mother and her 12-year-old son were killed when their car collided with a passenger train in Birmingham. The collision occurred about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at at train crossing on the city’s west side.
According to WVTM-TV, railroad crossings were working when the vehicle of 40-year-old Consuelo Laverne Gurley and her 12-year-old son Micheal Shereff Earskin Jr. was struck by the passenger train. An Amtrak spokesperson told the AP that 83 passengers were on the Crescent train traveling from New York to New Orleans. No passengers or train crew members were injured in Sunday’s collision.
The train was delayed for several hours and other train schedules were affected after investigators closed the tracks. According to the AP, Sunday’s collision came only two day after a similar accident between a car and Amtrak Crescent train killed three Atlanta-area residents travelling to visit family in north Georgia.
