Jacksonville State will play perennial Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball powers Murray State and Austin Peay at home in their only meetings of the 2012-13 season, the league announced today.
The OVC finished tweaking its 2012-13 basketball schedules after announcing divisional play a week ago and as postulated by The Star last week, the 16-game schedule includes home-and-home series with divisional foes, with single games split with teams from the other side.
JSU has never beaten either Murray State or Austin Peay on the road, so the home dates would seem advantageous for the Gamecocks.
JSU will play in the East Division with league newcomer Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
The Gamecocks’ home opponents will be their divisional foes, plus Murray, Peay and Southeast Missouri. Their road foes will be division opponents, plus SIU-Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois and UT Martin.
JSU’s complete conference schedule will appear in Thursday’s edition of The Star.
The conference said playing as many games after Jan. 1 as possible was a priority in creating the schedule. OVC play begins Dec. 29 with JSU playing Tennessee Tech and traveling to UT Martin for a New Year’s Eve game.
Men's games will continue to be contested on Thursdays and Saturdays, while women's games will be played on Saturdays and Mondays.
The 2013-14 schedules will mirror these schedules, meaning if a team opens the 2012-13 season at a conference opponent, that team will host that same opponent to begin the 2013-14 season.
The final piece of divisional play will be to determine tournament seeding and bracketing. The OVC Championships sub-committee is studying those issues now and the members’ directors of athletics will make a decision soon.
