Dorothy may have been swept off her Kansas farm by a tornado, but three Alabama cities make up the top five cities most likely to be hit by a twister. The Weather Channel has released a list of the Top 10 tornado cities in the United States and Huntsville sits at the top of that list. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa take the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Dr. Greg Forbes is a tornado expert for The Weather Channel and collected tornado data ranging between 1962 and 2011. Instead of just counting the sheer number of tornadoes, Dr. Forbes added up areas of tornado paths to give a more realistic probability of a particular location getting hit by a twister. Only three cities in the area commonly referred to as “tornado alley” were on the top 10 list.
Southern cities like Atlanta, Georgia, Nashville, Tennessee and Hattiesburg Mississippi were on the list that shows where homes are most likely to get hit by a tornado.
