Toomer's Corner will never be the same. Recent celebrations at the historic oaks have turned into somber reflections as the poisoned oaks were removed on Tuesday.
Only stumps remain where the historic oaks once stood. Crews started with the limbs and finally brought the trunks of the trees down just after noon. The stumps of the trees will remain until after the football season when the new renovation project begins. That is when the stumps will be uprooted and new trees will be planted.
Guards were stationed overnight at the oaks to prevent any rolling on Monday night. Officials wanted the limbs clear so that crews could make as little cuts as possible and preserve the limbs for mementos and keepsakes.
The university has released a rendering of the new design for the area. The long-term plan is to plant new oak trees leading up to Samford Hall. That should happen next year. Until then, a series of poles and wires will allow fans to continue to roll the corner after Auburn wins.
