Honda has recalled 45,800 Lincoln-made Odyssey minivans due to a rear-door defect traced to a part provided by a supplier, a Honda spokesman said.
The Japan-based automaker announced Wednesday it was voluntarily recalling more than 45,000 2008 and early-2009 model year Odyssey EX-L’s and Touring minivans. A company press release stated the vehicles have a defect in the gas-powered lifting struts for their tailgate doors that can cause them to fall abruptly.
Honda’s manufacturing plant in Lincoln assembles all Odyssey-model vehicles in the United States. However, the defect was not caused at the plant, said Chris Martin, spokesman for American Honda Motor, the company’s North American branch.
“It really has to do with the supplier,” Martin said. “The parts came that way.”
Martin said the defective struts came from a supplier called Stabilus, based in Gastonia, N.C. According to Stabilus’ website, the company produces gas struts and hydraulic vibration dampeners for clients around the world.
Attempts to reach a spokesman for Stabilus on Wednesday were unsuccessful.
The gas-powered struts have been reported to leak, potentially causing the vans’ doors to fall abruptly. According to the Honda press release, two injuries have been reported related to the issue.
“Someone can get bumped on the head,” Martin said.
Martin noted that the doors do not fall completely, however.
“There is a motor that will catch it before it falls completely,” he said. “They are not falling all the way down.”
Martin said the defect has not shown up in any other Honda vehicles.
Owners of defective Odysseys will have the opportunity to get them repaired, Martin said.
“We will replace both struts with new versions that do not have that type of problem,” he said. Honda will pay for the repairs, Martin said.
The $1.5 billion manufacturing plant in Lincoln employs approximately 4,000 people. Along with the Odyssey, the plant is also the sole producer of the Ridgeline pickup truck and the Pilot SUV.
Affected owners are encouraged to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as possible. To determine if a vehicle is defective, visit www.recalls.honda.com or call 1-800-999-1009.
