Heavy rain that lasted for almost two hours on Wednesday left many roads underwater and motorists stranded. The National Weather Service recorded almost five inches of rain at the Anniston Metropolitan Airport near Oxford on Wednesday afternoon after a storm developed in extreme southern Calhoun County.
The storm slowly moved north, dumping torrential amounts of rain on Oxford and Anniston while many area schools were releasing students for the day. Many lanes of Quintard Avenue in downtown Anniston quickly flooded and large sections of Snow Street in Oxford were overtaken by nearby creeks. WDNGNews received several photos that showed cars stranded on roads that appeared to be covered in water two-to-three feet deep.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham doesn’t expect rain to affect Calhoun County on Thursday, but there is a 90 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms late Thursday night into early Friday morning.
