About 25 people were evacuated from a motel in Attalla after a pipe bomb was found inside one of the rooms. No one was injured but two teens are being held in protective custody.
It all started when a school resource officer came to the Travelodge to check on two teens who hadn't been in school. When they went inside, they found a pipe bomb and two long guns. "I didn't know what to do," Elizabeth Vansipe, a motel guest said. "Thank God my son wasn't here." "At that time we contacted the Gadsden Bomb Squad," Chief Dennis Walker, Attalla Police said. "We had ATF, state fire marshals and Sheriff's office." "I asked what's going on? They said, we're evacuating the building, there's been a bomb threat," Vansipe said. "They were running up there and told everybody get away from this room there is dangerous stuff up there!" David Kilgo, a motel guest said. "I didn't hear the cops knock on my door, I just woke up to the cops shaking me in my bed telling me to get out of my room. I was exposed, telling me to get up, put clothes on and get out," Vansipe said. "Right here is them detonating it or at least trying to," Joey White, a motel guest said. Joey White captured it all on his cell phone. He watched as police detonated the small bomb. "It sounded not quite as loud as an M80 maybe," White said. "It looked like it was a small flash light," Chief Walker said."The 16 year old had made a small flashlight, taped it up, and made a device out of it." "We were right next door," Kilgo said. "Those people were quiet, we never heard anything from them. We didn't think they were trouble makers." "It blows your mind when a family with three big guns and a pipe bomb - you never know who you're living next to, I guess," Vansipe said. The teens are now in DHR custody. Officers are searching for their parents.
