The bill that will allow the Anniston City Council to vote on Sunday alcohol sales within the city limits is one step closer to a local vote. The Alabama Senate on Tuesday voted to approve the Anniston Ecotourism Beverage Bill which originated in the Senate in February and was passed to the House later that month.
The Anniston Star reported via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon that the Anniston bill passed on a 43-3 vote with Munford Rep. Steve Hurst, Anniston Rep. Randy Wood, and Rainbow City Rep. Mack Butler opposing. The bill now waits for approval by Gov. Robert Bentley before it can return to Anniston for city leaders to discuss.
The bill got held up in the House of Representatives for weeks when Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow of Red Bay held up votes on all local legislation. The holdup was sparked when a school bill sponsored by Morrow requesting to provide firearm training to teachers in Franklin County was vetoed.
A resolution was reached last week when Morrow and House Speaker Mike Hubbard reached an agreement on the matter.
