State officials are considering several ways to deal with revenue shortfalls that threaten parks in Alabama. The Associated Press reports the Alabama parks system is dependent on user fees for operations since they don’t receive tax money from the state or federal governments.
The state Legislature reportedly used a portion of those fees for the last two years to supplement the state’s general fund which left only a small budget surplus for operations of state parks. According to the AP, state parks director Greg Lein is looking into selling annual vehicle passes. Lein told the AP he is not sure about how much the passes will cost but says the program may start as early as this summer.
National parks and some states offer similar programs but Lein said that his department is looking for input from the public and will post questions on Facebook.
