Jacksonville city leaders hope to improve fire protection and save money by using grant money to upgrade its water system. The Anniston Star reports Jacksonville leaders are hoping to secure a $450,000 Community Development Block Grant to replace water mains, valves and lines.
The project would reportedly result in improvements to the underground system south of the Jacksonville State University campus. Jacksonville city planner Lynn Causey told The Star that it could be several months before the city knows whether or not it will receive the grant and that it would be a least a year before crews would begin work.
According to The Star, the cities of Piedmont and Hobson City are also pursuing a Community Development Block Grant to improve a community center and residential housing in the respective cities. Recent federal spending cuts reportedly may affect the total amount of grant money that can be awarded to a city of Jacksonville’s size.
In the past 30 years, roughly 2,000 projects have received a total of about $700 million in federal Community Development Block Grant money.
