Anniston's Sunday liquor sales bill might get a vote from the state house of representatives as early as Tuesday. The bill is aimed at drawing in more businesses like the Cheaha Brewing Company, a brewpub currently being built in the old L&N railroad freight house in downtown Anniston. City officials say people drawn in by the city's growing ecotourism trade, including cyclists using the bike trails often enjoy places like craft beer venues. But neither Anniston nor surrounding cities have any such venues since Sunday liquor sales aren't yet allowed in that area. Anniston's mayor and entire council voted to support the idea. I think people want to be able to enjoy a good venue, and have an opportunity to enjoy a sporting event on Sundays, and being able to enjoy a craft beer on Sunday," Rodney Snider with Cheaha Brewing Company said. The bill wasn't expected to even make it out of committee because Calhoun County's legislative delegation was split over the idea. However, in an unusual move, the bill was voted out of committee anyway. Observers believe this is because committee members sensed there was overwhelming support for it in the Anniston community. A similar bill to allow Sunday liquor sales nearby in Weaver is still waiting for a committee vote.
