Threats, relationships and late night excursions were among the testimony Wednesday in the trial of a man accused of being Calhoun County's "Eastside Rapist." Ularius Sherrod Johnson is on trial for a 27 count indictment with charges including rape, sodomy, kidnapping, robbery and burglary, for a series of rapes and robberies that occurred from 2007 to 2009.
Among those testify Wednesday were Latoya Griffin, who told the jury Ularius Johnson was her "ex." She says the two dated for four years and even lived together briefly, even though she knew he continued to see other people. Griffin testified that during their time together, Johnson never worked, except to sell marijuana twice a week or so. She says she often gave him money she earned at her own job at a fast food restaurant. Griffin said Johnson gave her two rings, brought in a TV they used, and brought other items often for her to pawn for him. She says she never asked how he got them, or how he managed to wear nice clothing and nice shoes even though he had no job.
Griffin said it wasn't unusual for Johnson to go out at night, all night, sometimes not even coming back until the next day. She said said when she heard reports about the "Eastside Rapist" she expressed concerns about being left alone at night. She said he responded by telling her she had nothing to worry about, "No one's coming to get you." Griffin also said she owned a 2007 Suzuki Forenza, but he usually drove it, even dropping her off at her job. "After I had it a couple of weeks it might as well as been his," she told the jury. Earlier in the week the jury saw a similar blue car in surveillance video taken at a pawn shop, showing someone other than Griffin or Johnson getting out of the car on the passenger side to pawn items later linked to some of the victims.
Griffin also read the jury a letter Johnson wrote to her after his arrest. The letter, full of profanities and insults, complained that Johnson had been trying to get in touch with her and "not just for a…hello." She demanded she meet with Johnson's brother for some unspecified matter, told her not to involve the police, and told her to "use her head." The letter also quotes Johnson saying he wants her to call him, and "Don't talk crazy on the phone." Griffin says she never met with Johnson's brother.
