An education budget that will be considered in Montgomery next week wants to give teachers their first raise in five years. AL.com reports House Ways and Means Education Committee chairman Jay Love of Montgomery expects his committee will vote on the budget next week.
The proposed $5.72 billion Education Trust Fund would give teachers and other education employees a 2 percent pay rise and would appropriate $5 million for a state-funded alternative to teacher liability insurance.
According to AL.com, supporters say the proposed budget is a way to reward the “lifeblood” of the state’s education, but a top Democrat called the modest raise an insult and said the liability insurance is about trying to bust the power of the Alabama Education Association.
The last pay raise seen by teachers was in 2008.
